Every farmer can make a duck feeder with his own hands. Before the manufacturing process, you should familiarize yourself with the basic requirements that apply to tanks for feeding waterfowl. A properly designed feeder will save money on feed and help keep the house and walking area clean.

Primary requirements

The main requirement for feed equipment is complete safety. Food intake is an important component for waterfowl, on which the health and productivity of animals depends. Therefore, certain requirements are imposed on the feeders, regardless of whether they are selected in a specialized store or made independently. Correctly designed feeders will exclude ducks from throwing feed out of the container, which positively reflects on the budget of the poultry farm.

Wooden structure

In the event that the owner includes different types of feed in the diet of poultry, then it is assumed that several containers are installed. The height of the sides of the feeders and drinkers depends on the age and size of the bird. For babies of the first month of life, it should be 5 cm, up to a year - about 15 cm, for adults - at least 20 cm.In this case, the breed of waterfowl poultry does not matter - for Indo-Ducks, Mulard, Peking ducks, the size requirements are the same.

In addition to size, other requirements include:

  • sufficient capacity, which is determined based on the total livestock, the selected feeding regime and types of feed mixtures;
  • reliable fixation in the poultry house;
  • free approach not only for ducks, but also for poultry farm workers;
  • the possibility of quick service - cleaning and drying.

It is necessary to take into account the materials from which it is planned to independently manufacture the feed equipment. First of all, they must be environmentally friendly, not contain toxic impurities.

Feeder types

Bunker feeder made of wood

With a small number of waterfowl on the farm, a tray feeder is made. It is designed for a dozen ducks and is more suitable for dry food. Design advantages in fast production. The work will take no more than an hour and a half, and plywood sheets will be required from the materials. Such a feeder has access from all sides. As a rule, it is fixed at a height of 20 cm from the floor. Some tray products are equipped with a locking element that fits into the grooves. This design significantly reduces forage spreading.

Hopper type feeders

The most popular products are hopper feed equipment. Its main advantages include a reduction in labor costs for employees. In the bunker, you can lay a certain stock of feed mixture, which is quite enough for several days with large volumes of the structure. A similar feeder is made of wood or galvanized steel sheet. It is suitable for various types of food, including grass.

Often, owners have to quickly construct a temporary structure. It is referred to as auto feeders. At the base: a five-liter plastic container from under the water, wire and a small rounded basin. It takes no more than half an hour to manufacture, and the main advantage lies in the fact that the feed is fed automatically, as the dry mixture is consumed.

Drawings and dimensions of structures

To manufacture a structure according to the type of tray, you will need to draw up a sketch or drawing and determine in advance the dimensions of the product.

Tray type feed equipment

The trough structures are easy to manufacture and are suitable for dry and mixed feed. It is important to make high sides, even for small containers, so that ducks cannot climb inside and scatter food. Thanks to the shape of the trough, it can be easily cleaned of food debris and disinfected.

It is just as easy to make a bunker-type feeder, however, a preliminary sketch with dimensions is required for it.

Dimensions for hopper and trough feeders

It is important to take care of the strength and safety of the product. There should be no sharp corners in it, otherwise the ducks will get hurt. It is desirable that the structure is lightweight, mobile, and dries quickly after cleaning. The material is selected depending on the diet. For dry mixes, wood is suitable, and for wet and juicy feed, it is better to take galvanized steel or plastic.

What tools and materials may be needed

The tools that are needed to make feed equipment are likely to be found in every farmer:

  • saw or file for working with wood, metal, plastic;
  • drill;
  • hammer and nails;
  • pencil;
  • roulette.

In addition to tools, you may need various bars, slats, metal wire, screws and self-tapping screws, loops for fixing. As for materials, as a rule, improvised means are used. In the manufacture of a feeder can help:

  • plastic bottles, basins, small tanks, other containers of different sizes;
  • plastic sewer pipes of different diameters;
  • wooden boards or plywood sheets;
  • metal containers or boxes;
  • thin metal sheets.

If you have any of these items or materials on your farm, you can quickly make a convenient feeder and place it in the house.

Making feeders for ducklings with your own hands

Automatic products for young animals

Duck feeders have special requirements. Toddlers are not very neat, they tend to crawl into the food container with their paws, overturn it. Therefore, feed equipment should be placed on the floor of the house and secured if unstable. Ducklings must have access to food from all sides. Feeders should have high sides, but small ducklings should be free to get the feed mixture.

Automatic feeders for young stock have a number of advantages. The first thing that pleases the farmer is the continuous feed supply. In addition, the feed mixture always remains clean and does not spill out of the device. Automatic equipment can be made using a five-liter plastic canister and a basin. In some cases, a bucket is used.

Along the edges of the plastic bowl, make eight holes at an equal distance from each other. Cut off the top of the canister and make holes in the lower part, as in a basin. Cut the metal wire, fasten the basin and the canister with its parts through the holes. The edges of each part of the wire must be bent so that the ducklings cannot be injured while eating. Feeders must be safe for humans when cleaning and disinfecting containers.

The resulting container for feeding refers to bunker products and is a container with an opening for feeding the feed mixture. It is easy to execute, and no preliminary drawing is required before production.

To make a wooden tray at home, you will need boards, slats, a hacksaw, a drill, self-tapping screws, a tape measure, and a piece of sandpaper. Initially, you need to make a sketch of the product. Then you can proceed to the blanks. They need to be cut out and processed with sandpaper. Attach the sides to the bottom with self-tapping screws. Also attach hexagonal sidewalls with self-tapping screws. Screw the rail to the tops of the sidewalls. It is needed for easy carrying and so that the bird cannot climb inside.

The product can be made from a ready-made wooden trough, supplemented with a carrying handle. The wood construction is suitable for many types of feed. It can be easily processed and cleaned from the remnants of feed mixture and dirt.

From the sewer pipe

You will need a pipe, a PVC tee, plugs, files for working with metal. The pipe should be cut into 3 pieces. The size of one should be 70 cm, the second - 20 cm, the third - 10 cm. Place plugs on the 20 cm part of the pipe. Then you need to fit the tee so that the side elbow is pointing up. It is necessary to insert the longest part into it.

Sewer pipe feeders

The second plug is placed on a free section of a 70-centimeter pipe, a small piece is attached to the side of the tee. The resulting structure should be secured in the house. This will require metal slats.

Ducklings will be able to receive food from the side of the tee. Replenish such a feeder with a supply of mixture once every two days. With such an adaptation, you don't have to worry about the ducklings going hungry.
