Gloucester ("Gloster") - apple variety of German breeding late winter ripening. The species was bred in Germany in the post-war period as a result of hybridization of Glockenapfel varieties. ("Glockenapfel") and Richard Delicious ("Richard delicious").

Fruit trees of the Gloucester variety are popular in Western Europe. The variety has successfully passed the initial and production tests in Ukraine.

The plant is used in industrial and private horticultural farms. The variety is in great demand in the gardens of the steppe and forest-steppe zones, as well as in the southern zone of Polesye. In Russia, Gloucester apple trees can often be found in the southern regions.

Grade description

Apple trees "Gloucester" can be attributed to the category of vigorous plants with a fast growth rate. The tree crown is characterized by medium thickening and a pyramidal or highly oval shape. As the plant grows, the crown becomes round. Skeletal branches form sharp corners with the stem. The end of the branches rushes up.

The apple tree buds have a high level of excitability and the ability to shoot formation below average. Fruiting is mixed.

Blossoming of the apple tree occurs in mid-late periods and lasts quite a long time. Inflorescences are formed of three or four flowers. Pollen viability indices range from 30% to 80%. Free pollination contributes to the setting of no more than 18% of the fruit. In the presence of pollinators, this indicator increases to 26%. The best pollinators for the Gloucester apple tree are represented by the varieties Idared, Jonathan, Gala, James Greave and Spartan.

The fruits formed on apple trees of the Gloucester variety are characterized by a rather large size. The standard average weight of one apple is about 150 grams. Proper care and compliance with all agricultural requirements allows you to get fruits weighing about 200 grams.

The rounded shape of the fruit may have some ribbing, which is most pronounced on the apical part of the apples. The main coloration of the fruit is usually light yellow, and the integumentary type of color is expressed on almost the entire surface of the ripened fruit in the form of raspberry red, somewhat blurred blush.

The peel of the fruit is quite strong, characterized by smoothness, gloss, elasticity and has an average thickness over the entire area of ​​the fruit. In each subsequent year, the yield of trees of this variety gradually increases. The highest recorded yield intensity is formed in the tenth year of growth and development. A ten-year-old apple tree of this variety is capable of producing about 70 kilograms of fruit. Dwarf rootstocks are characterized by the highest efficiency of the productivity potential.

The winter hardiness of the Gloucester variety is relatively high. Resistance to powdery mildew is very high, and to scab pathogens is medium.

Ripening occurs in late September. To fully reveal the taste, apples should lie down for a short time. The period of consumer use begins with the first of January. With proper storage, the harvested fruits can lie until February. When stored in the refrigerator, the period is extended to the last days of April. The transportability parameters of fruits of this variety are very high.
