Ficus Robusta rubber-bearing, from the Latin name Ficus elastica Robusta, is very popular in indoor floriculture and, according to most experts, is one of the best varieties in this form.

General information

Ficus Robusta is a rubbery species of indoor ficus and is one of the most unpretentious plants. Caring for it at home is simple and takes a minimum of time. Ficus Robusta harmoniously fits into almost any interior design. In addition, the plant reproduces very easily.

Ficus Robusta has thick and fairly large leaves, which allows this indoor plant to very effectively purify indoor air from toxic substances, including benzenes and phenol.

According to the teachings of Feng Shui, indoor ficus Robusta is a symbol of cleaning the aura of a living room, and also serves to protect the house from evil spirits and negativity.

Ficus Robusta: care and cultivation

Plant care

In order for the plant to please the florist for a long time with its magnificent appearance, one should adhere to the rules for the care of ficus Robusta.

Robusta is characterized by easy adaptation to new conditions. Ficus is absolutely not demanding on lighting. The plant feels comfortable in fairly shaded places. However, to preserve the appearance and brightness of the foliage, it is recommended to place the plant in a lit place. The use of artificial light gives a good effect.

The temperature required for the plant ranges from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius. Exposure to cold air often causes leaves to fall. It is forbidden to place the ficus Robusta in close proximity to radiators. Rubber ficus does not respond well to dry and too warm air and quickly loses moisture in such conditions. Humidity in the room where ficus is grown should not be lower than 50%.

Watering and feeding

Ficus should be watered year-round. In winter, the plant requires less moisture. Water before irrigation should be settled for a day. Pay attention to the condition of the soil. Severe waterlogging can cause rotting of the root system. Watering the ficus is carried out exclusively as necessary, and it is better to dry the soil a little than to fill the plant with water.

The use of fertilizers is required in the phase of active plant growth, which can be observed from the first decade of spring to late autumn. The most effective is the use of top dressing with a base in the form of nitrogen components. Fertilizers should be applied with an interval of ten days.

Ficus Robusta is quite active and intense growth during the growing season. The plant should be transplanted into a flower pot, which has a large size and diameter. Transplantation is carried out in the early spring or at the very beginning of summer.

A young plant needs to be replanted no more than once a year. Adults and already large ficuses can be transplanted every three years or regularly replace the topsoil in a flower pot. When transplanting, you need to remember about creating high-quality drainage.

Planting substrate can be prepared independently. It is allowed to use special nutrient soil for ficus. The plant is quite hardy and easily tolerates transplantation.

You can rejuvenate adult Ficus Robusta by trimming. It should be remembered that the cut part of a houseplant is suitable for propagation by means of cuttings.

Before pinching or pruning, it is important to know that ficuses emit poisonous milky juice, so that the grower needs to take care of his safety - the “milk” should not get on the skin and especially on the mucous membranes.

Pruning should be done in late February or early March. If the plant has not reached the required height, then pinching should be done only on the apical part of the central shoot. With a more serious formation of the crown, trim should be carried out seven centimeters above the location of the desired leaf or branch. It should be remembered that pruning and pinching the central shoot completely stops the growth of the stem.

Thin branches are cut in a straight line. When trimming the stem, an oblique cut should be made. In this case, the upper part of the slice will be located above the kidney, and the bottom of the slice will be on the opposite side and located at the level of the kidney.

Pruning is done with a sanitized sharp knife or pruner. You can disinfect the pruning tool by baking over a fire or treating with alcohol infusion. After trimming, you will need to remove the milky juice with a sponge soaked in water.

Possible problems

In order for the acquired or newly planted houseplant to be healthy for a long time and decorate the room, you should protect the flower from negative external influences and adhere to the basic rules for the care of ficus.

  1. The acquired new plant should be immediately quarantined for three weeks, observing the condition of the ficus.
  2. It is very important to conduct periodic inspections of the plant and assess the health status of the ficus.
  3. Weekly use of a soap solution when wiping leaves can protect the ficus from infection with plant pests.

Strict adherence to the rules for caring for a houseplant helps protect it from weakening and damage by diseases or pests.

How to transplant ficus

Ficus Robusta is an unpretentious and beautiful indoor plant, and its longevity and health depend on proper care. Any errors in care have a negative impact on the growth and development of ficus. Compliance with the temperature and humidity parameters in the room, as well as preventive measures can protect the plant from many problems and allows you to get a healthy ficus, which will serve as a worthy decoration of the interior.
